Roswell Travel with Children and Teens

Attractions and Activities
Few attractions and activities in Roswell are designed specifically for children and teens, but many can interest and delight properly guided youngsters—and most are FREE.
Key:   P = Preschool age children, E = Elementary school age children, T = Teens.

Outdoor Activities and Attractions for Children and Teens

Playground equipment (swings, jungle gyms, etc.): P, E, T. Cahoon Park, Poe Corn Park, Enchanted Lands Park, Melendez Park, plus a few other small parks scattered throughout Roswell.

Spring River Park and Zoo: P, E, T. The best place in Roswell to take kids! Fishing Pond (children under 12 only; bring your own rod, tackle, and bait), picnic tables, grills, playground equipment, animals; ride the miniature train and the antique carousel in summer and on spring and fall weekends; feed the geese (bring bread or wild bird seed) in winter.

Cielo Grande: P, E, T. Play structure, soccer fields, walking track, small skateboard park, Unity Center with pool tables for teens.

New Mexico Military Institute: P, E, T. Spacious lawns, walkways, plazas, statues, interesting architecture, small rock garden, Godfrey Athletic Center (pool, gyms, tennis and racquetball), occasional parades, Military Museum of sorts, information for prospective students.

South Park Cemetery: P, E, T. Follow the walking tour brochure to find interesting grave stones.

Pioneer Plaza: P, E, T. Benches for sitting, Chisum statue—see the Jinglebob earmarks?

Spring River Hike and Bike Trail: P, E, T. Hike a small portion or the whole trail (but then you need to get back to where you started).

Swimming: P, E, T. Cahoon Park, ENMU-R, and Bottomless Lakes in summer; NMMI Godfrey Athletic Center year-round.

Tennis: E, T. Free courts in Cahoon Park, and at NMMI for a fee.

Drag Racing: E, T. Friday and Saturday evenings at Area 51 Dragway during the summer.

High School or NMMI Sports: E, T. Visitors are always welcome.

Bottomless Lakes State Park: P, E, T. Hiking, fishing (bring your own equipment); swimming, paddle boats, and nature programs in summer.

Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge: P, E, T. Birds (especially in winter), nature walking trail and nature driving tour, occasional Ranger-led tours, fishing and hunting in season (bring your own equipment).

Festivals, Parades: P, E, T. Most festivals have family-friendly events. The Visitor’s Center has information.

Indoor Activities and Attractions for Children and Teens

UFO Museum: E, T. UFO and Sci-Fi enthusiasts will enjoy it, the older ones more than the younger ones. All ages will love the Gift Shop!

Souvenir Shops: E, T. Always a hit! Give the kids their own money and let them comparison shop between stores—they are close enough to walk back and forth. The Spacewalk at Roswell Space Center and Hangar 84 at Alien Zone II are fun.

Civic Center Mural: E, T. A game of I Spy keeps children occupied while adults gather information at the Visitor’s Center, and helps identify sights to look for in Roswell.

Roswell Museum and Art Center: E, T. Jimenez’ fiberglass sculptures, other kid-friendly art, interesting Western artifacts, a Robert Goddard video, a spacesuit and a moon rock, Capitan Mountain in Peter Hurd’s paintings, a small activities room (behind the Western exhibit), and another Gift Shop.

Goddard Planetarium: E, T. Occasional planetarium shows, especially during the UFO Festival.

Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art: E, T. Some wild and wacky art—the school of golf bag fish is a favorite.

Historical Museum: E, T. Kids especially like the old-fashioned kitchen, and the varied exhibits upstairs (Little League World Champions, toys, Mariachi music).

Petroleum Building: E, T. The view from the 8th floor is most interesting if you have already visited some of the places you can spot from the balcony (WARNING: Hold on to your children!). If your kids need to burn off some excess energy, let them walk up. Stop in Munchies before you go up, order their Pizza Special (good—not great—but cheap). It will be ready when you come down.

Roswell Public Library: P, E, T. A delightful children’s area, story time and crafts sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the little ones, free Internet.

Roswell Livestock Auction: P, E, T. Have you ever seen a live cattle auction? An exciting,  glimpse of the real West! Not for the squeamish. Mondays beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Roswell Livestock and Farm Supply: P, E, T. Shop for a cowboy hat, then go across the street to the Cowboy Café for a green chile cheeseburger and a slice of pie.

Peter Piper Pizza: P, E, T. Video and arcade games are a hit with all ages—as is the pizza.

Bowling: E, T. Town and Country Entertainment Center is family friendly, especially during the daytime.

Movies: P, E, T. Eight screens, behind the Mall.

Not of This World: T. A gathering spot for teens in the evening, a “Christian dance club” on Friday nights.

Little Theater, Concerts: E, T. The Visitor’s Center has schedules of upcoming events.
