Highlights: Nine Must-See Attractions in Roswell, New Mexico
(All these New Mexico travel destinations are FREE except the UFO Museum and Bottomless Lakes State Park)
#1. UFO Museum: World UFO Headquarters! (and one of the most popular
travel destinations in New Mexico)
#2. Roswell Museum and Art Center: A wonderful collection of
Southwestern Art and Southwestern artists, Robert Goddard rocket materials, and the Aston
Collection of Western Artifacts.
#3. Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art: An impressive and fun
collection of contemporary art (not just Southwestern) from the Artist-in-Residence Program.
#4. Historical Museum: Interesting local history exhibits, with local
and Southwestern books (mostly about history instead of UFOs) for sale in the Gift Shop.
#5. New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI): A pleasant campus for walking,
with distinctive architecture and the McBride Military Museum (a work in
progress).
#6. Spring River Park and Zoo: The best place in Roswell to take
kids! A small collection of native Southwestern and exotic animals, a kids’ fishing
pond and playground, and antique carousel and miniature train rides for
a small fee during the summer and on fall and spring weekends.
#7. Spring River Recreation Trail: Five miles (8 km) of paved
pathway following the Spring River through the heart of Roswell.
#8. Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge: Nature trails, an
eight-mile (13 km) nature drive, and excellent year-round birding -- and
the travel destination of
thousands of Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes from November to March.
#9. Bottomless Lakes State Park: Water-filled sinkholes (some claim a
UFO disappeared here) with camping,
hiking, and fishing; plus swimming, paddleboats, and Southwestern nature programs
during the summer.
