Roswell, Your Travel Guide to the UFO Capital of the World!
News Release

7-25-2008  Tour Roswell Like a Native . . . or Maybe Like an Alien!

Roswell, NM What is there to do in Roswell after weve seen the UFO Museum? This common tourist question receives fascinating answers in New Mexico author Lynn Michelsohns new book, Roswell, Your Travel Guide to the UFO Capital of the World! Here visitors find the detailed information they need to enjoy this unique travel destination, as the author discusses locations and events associated with the 1947 UFO Crash, Roswells world-class art scene, its early Wild West days of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and its role in Robert Goddards early rocket experiments. Michelsohn also includes information about New Mexico Military Institute, wildlife, nightlife, shopping, dining, indoor and outdoor activities, and all sorts of local oddities in this first comprehensive travel guide to Roswell.

If we can let visitors know more about our attractions beyond the UFOs, they are likely to spend more time exploring Roswell, which certainly benefits our economy, Michelsohn explained. I hope this travel guide adds to the growing interest in Roswell as a tourist destination.

Roswell, Your Travel Guide to the UFO Capital of the World! certainly generated interest for this Southwestern city at its Publication Party held earlier this month at New York Citys Carnegie Deli, made famous by Woody Allens movie, Broadway Danny Rose. The author, her husband (former Roswell attorney Larry Michelsohn), and their sons Moses (the books illustrator who lives in Laurel, Maryland) and Aaron (the cover photographer currently living in Memphis, Tennessee), had gathered there to celebrate the books release with friends and media representatives.

Ive only seen the cover, but it sure makes a trip to Roswell sound like fun! commented one guest, New York talent executive Donald Berman.

You gave me a wonderful tour of Roswell, remarked another guest, Sharon Hernstadt, the New York attorney and travel devotee who later hosted an after party at Sardis in Broadways Theater District. I didnt know they even played polo in New Mexico! she added, referring to the books mention of American humorist Will Rogers playing a chukka at NMMI when his son attended school there in the 1930s.

People have a lot to learn about Roswell and New Mexico, observed Rachel Garcia, Roswell Court Interpreter and Spanish language consultant for the book, as she shared a flaming Sardis Baked Alaska with her husband, Roswell attorney Ramon Garcia. Most people know nothing about Roswell beyond the UFO connectionand theres so much more.

Michelsohn, who has been thinking about writing this book for several years, readily agreed. So many people have told me fascinating stories about Roswell that should be more accessible, she explained. She cited City Historian Elvis Flemings stories about Charlie Perry, Roswells second most famous Sheriff (after Pat Garrett); UFO Museum Director Julie Shuster information about the promotion and debunking of at least six (so far) supposed 1947 UFO crash sites; Goddard High School English teacher Valarie Grants intriguing tour of Roswells historic South Park Cemetery (no, Kenny is not there); and NMMI and Police Department tales of Sergeant Barney Leonard who died in a shootout in 1934 after creating the worlds firstand probably only Armed Motorcycle Cavalry. He had begun patrolling the city single-handedly (literally, as he lost a hand during the Phillipine Insurrection) on his Harley-Davidson in 1912.

While this is Michelsohns first book about Roswell, she is not a new author. Having practiced psychology in New Mexico since 1980 under her professional name, Dr. Lynn Daugherty, she has previously written an award-winning self-help bestseller, Why Me? Help for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse, as well as a childrens guide to Santa Fe with her son Moses, just for fun. Her next book will explore Roswells offbeat historical events and characters in more depth.
